Events
2014-2016: I participated in my school's "Kinder Buddy" program, which involved an older student taking a younger child under their wing and giving them a safe space to learn.
2014-2016: I was part of my school's Leadership Club, which made speeches and helped organize events at my school. Both years, I went to the Elementary Leadership Conference, a conference of fourth and fifth graders from various public schools who would come together and learn about serving the community.
2015-2016: I had the idea to throw a party for my teacher to celebrate all he had done for us. I gathered my classmates, planned the activities, coordinated the supplies and managed it without a hitch.
I kicked off my mini notebook making venture and started selling notebooks to my family and friends. They loved them, and at the affordable price of $1, I had quite a lot of demand! I ended up running the business throughout middle school, earning a couple hundred dollars.
2015-2016: I was part of the Girl Scouts and earned my Bronze Award helping my troop run planting events at our local senior center.
2016-2017: I became acutely aware of all the environmental problems in our world. I decided that I wanted to do something. I ran a Neighborhood Plant-Off, which was a contest to see which of my neighbors could grow the tallest plant in a month, prizes and all. It was a raging success and I brought my community together for one month, as well as instilling a love of gardening in many of them.
I threw a birthday party for my sister, bringing many of my relatives together. It was then that I realized that I had to keep bringing the community together, whether it be my relatives, my neighbors, my friends or random strangers.
2016-2017: I participated in my school's Leadership Club, which organized events and pep rallies for my entire school to come together and participate in.
2014-2017: I participated in Project Cornerstone, an organization dedicated to building webs of support around young adults so they can grow into healthy, caring and responsible adults.
2017-2018: After seeing how open my neighborhood was to community events, I ran Monkey Bar Classes for the kids of my neighborhood for the entire summer. The classes were another hit and our neighborhood park was more packed than I had ever seen it after those classes.
I started running my Weekly Summer Times newspaper, which involves advice for the community, creative activity suggestions, jokes, comics and quotes to lighten up my friends' days. 2017-2018: I was part of the National Junior Honor Society at my school.
2018-2019: I ran Cooking Classes for everyone in my neighborhood. We all got together and had a fun time with the ingredients, learning how to follow recipes, and realizing how good home-cooked food tasted! My neighborhood had never been closer.
2019-2020: I decided that it was time to expand beyond my community, and COVID-19 gave me the perfect opportunity to do that. I had been selling mini notebooks for four years now, and I decided I wanted to teach kids how to make them on their own. I ran Mini Notebook Making Classes over Zoom, with an overwhelming turnout!
Science has always been one of my passions, and I had taken an Organic Chemistry elective the previous year. In that class, I had done a DNA Extraction experiment - I found it fun and educational! I knew that kids, stuck at home due to the pandemic, would love something hands-on to do, and parents would appreciate the educational portion of it. I partnered with Life Skill Learning (https://www.lifeskilllearnings.com/) to do a seminar on DNA Extraction. Everyone loved it and learned a lot too! (See recording in Speeches)
2020-2021: COVID-19 threw a wrench into a lot of my plans, but I was still able to run an online Life Skill Learnings seminar on the origin of words. I remember thinking about how little of the population really knew where words came from, and I wanted kids to know more about the topic to make spelling and word-related topics easier for them to understand and excel at. It was a great success! (See recording in Speeches)
I interviewed the youngest national storyteller in the world, Shanaya Singh, for Life Skill Learnings as well.
